Adventures in Rain

The monsoon in Arizona is something special, and we love to chase it!

Coincidentally, the word monsoon comes from the Arabic مَوسِم (mawsim; season) and refers not to the individual storms, but to the season of storms. This has been a strong season of storms, and they come on suddenly. I was getting a haircut this afternoon when one of the sudden torrents typical of the season poured down on my car.

And just as quickly, it was over!

So, I did what we like to do after a good hard monsoon rain. I went to the riverbeds to see if they would swell with the runoff from all the city’s streets and surfaces. Despite the ferocity of this downpour, the creek didn’t rise, but I did have a surprisingly close encounter with a Cooper’s Hawk at the riverside.

And I went on my way to finish up my errands — a refreshing Eegees, new plants and pots for the balcony, and the decent showerhead I’ve been longing for!

A couple days later, though, we did get to witness a pretty full creek from the Craycroft Bridge!
